South Shore Humane Society - Braintree Pet Shelter

South Shore Humane Society

The South Shore Humane Society was formed in 1974 by a group of caring residents concerned about the condition of dogs at the local town dog pounds. At that time there was no real effort to find homes for the stray dogs. The volunteers began taking pictures of the dogs and wrote a weekly column in the local newspaper called “Around the Pounds” so people would know where to go to adopt a new family member. As time went on, the Society developed a spay/neuter assistance program, and worked on legislation to ban circus acts from bringing exotic animals to Braintree. Presently, South Shore Humane Society has a spay/neuter assistance program for cats, dogs and rabbits, an active trap/neuter/release program for feral cats, an adoption program for cats as well as an outreach program to educate the public about the importance of responsible pet care. We also have a pet medical assistance fund, called Smokey’s Fund, to assist pet owners with emergency medical issues.
