The shelter is open to the public from 10 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. For after hours concerns requiring immediate assistance, please call (619) 579-3311 and select 1 to speak to a Police Dispatcher. The El Cajon Animal Shelter houses stray or relinquished pets found within the city limits of El Cajon and La Mesa. Animals not claimed by their owners are placed up for adoption to the general public.

Adoption Process

Come to the Shelter and see who’s here! We have a variety of dogs and cats and other animals. The population changes daily. We have something for everyone including pure breeds, seniors, large, small and everything in between. Adoption Fees: Dogs $80, Cats $80, Senior $30. Spay/Neuter refundable deposit (required only if animal has not been spayed/neutered) is $40. Adoption costs include microchip and vaccines. If you live within the City of El Cajon, you will need to purchase a 1 year dog license for any dog over the age of 4 months for an additional cost of $20.
