Legally the Women's Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and formerly known as the Women's Humane Society, our organization began doing business under the name Women's Animal Center in 2018. For 150 years, Women's Animal Center (WAC) has served the pets and the people in the Greater Philadelphia region, while advocating for the welfare of animals throughout our great country and beyond.
Upon arriving at the shelter, you will meet with one of our adoption counselors. The counselor will review your application; and discuss your personal situation and past pet history. If you and the animal in whom you're interested in adopting make a good match on paper, then you’ll get to spend some time together to ensure compatibility before a decision is made. When the adoption is approved, your new pet will undergo a final health evaluation. WAC is committed to reducing pet overpopulation, and require that all cats and dogs be spayed or neutered before they leave our shelter. In the majority of cases, your new pet will already have been spayed or neutered before you meet them. We offer special pricing for optional services at the time of adoption, including a combination test for feline leukemia abd feline immunodeficiency virus for cats; as well as heartworm tests for dogs, Each of these tests are optional and cost $30.00 in addition to the adoption fee. You will receive brief counseling to guide you in transitioning your pet into their new home and providing them proper care. You will complete final paperwork and pay the applicable adoption fee. If your pet has already been spayed or neutered, he or she will come home with you on the day of your adoption.
