Wisconsin German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue, Inc. - Cottage Grove Pet Shelter

Wisconsin German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue, Inc.

Wisconsin German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue is an all volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of adoptable German Shorthaired Pointers. WGSPR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization covering the state of Wisconsin and upper peninsula of Michigan. We save GSPs from shelters, humane societies and owner surrenders. Our rescued dogs are placed into foster homes to be loved, nurtured, trained and in some cases nursed back to health while we find the perfect permanent home and loving family for them.

Adoption Process

1. Complete our online adoption application for an available dog. WGSPR will review your application and follow up with you via email. WGSPR will conduct a veterinary reference check and background check. Applications will be processed as they come in, we will not hold any dogs. The length of time for the adoption approval process can vary as it is dependent on the schedules and availability of our volunteers. Please be patient through this process. NOTE: It is WGSPR policy that any applicant that has current pets has up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm test and give monthly heartworm preventative in order to be approved to adopt. If you pass the initial check…2. Receive a home visit from WGSPR at a jointly agreed date/time.WGSPR will contact your family to set-up a home visit appointment. The home visit is a chance for WGSPR to get to know your family, your lifestyle, and answer any questions your family has about the breed, the adoption process and more. All family members living in he household must be present for the home visit. After the home visit, WGSPR will determine and notify your family if you are approved for adoption. If you are approved your application will be good for 2 years. If declined, we will provide the reason we are not able to allow you to adopt from us. If you are approved…3. Connect with the family who is fostering the dog you are interested in. WGSPR will put you in contact with the foster family to further discuss the GSP that you are interested in. Here is a great opportunity to ask questions of the family who knows the dog best. There can be up to 5 applicants meeting an available dog, we want the best fit for the dog. We do not do first applied first adopt. If you want to continue in the adoption process with this GSP… 4. Schedule a Meet-and-Greet with the dog (& foster family). Your family and the dog’s foster family will set-up a Meet-and-Greet at a jointly agreed date/time. WGSPR requires your family, including your dog(s), as the potential adopters, to travel to the foster home for the Meet-and-Greet. At the meet-and-greet, the GSP and your family will determine if you’re a good fit for each other. At this point, the foster family will also assess your family’s match potential with this GSP. WGSPR foster families have the FINAL decision on the family that will adopt the GSP rescue. Considerations include initial online application, home visit, meet-and-greet and overall best fit and safety considerations for the GSP rescue. Our dogs are not placed on a first come first meet basis, we strive to find the best family for our dogs. If you are not selected for the dog you applied for, we will continue to work with you to find the dog that is a perfect match for your family. WGSPR strives for a perfect match between your family and the GSP. During the meet-and-greet, your family may realize that this GSP isn’t a good fit. If you are still interested in GSPs, we encourage you to consider other GSPs available for adoption. 5. Finalize adoption! Finalization is an exciting time for your family and your dog. WGSPR will contact you to complete all the necessary paperwork, submit the adoption fee (more information below) and provide you with a welcome kit.
