The West Milford Animal Shelter Society, Inc. (WMASS) is a 100% volunteer organization and IRS recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was formed in 1976 out of a desperate need to establish an adoption program at the West Milford Animal Shelter, a municipal facility. The WMASS (West Milford Animal Shelter Society Inc.) is a non-profit humane organization whose purpose is to promote, through direct action and education, the welfare of companion animals, particularly dogs and cats, by finding permanent, loving homes for homeless animals, reducing the number of unwanted pets, encouraging the humane treatment of animals and teaching an appreciation of the human/animal bond.
The WMASS volunteers work very hard to find good, permanent, loving homes for the adoptable animals in our care. Anyone interested in adopting an animal from our facility is required to fill out a pre-adoption form on-site before viewing any animals. If you rent, bring your lease that shows proof you are allowed to have pets. Dogs are tested for heartworm (and treated if necessary), and cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV. Both dogs and cats are de-wormed and are up to date on distemper and rabies shots. All ADULT dogs and cats are spayed or neutered before leaving our facility. Puppies and kittens require a $50.00 surgical deposit at adoption time. The deposit is returned to the new owner when veterinary proof of spay/neuter is provided to us by the adopter.
