Mother Gaia Animal Rescue - Lafayette Pet Shelter

Mother Gaia Animal Rescue is a non-profit, licensed, foster and volunteer-based rescue for pets in need of new homes. Our mission is to rescue animals in shelters and place into foster homes where they can receive medical care, training, and love until they’re ready to go into their forever home - many of which come from areas with overpopulation and high euthanasia rates.

Adoption Process

Our adoption process starts with an application and moves onto a meet and greet with the animal and foster, then finalized with a home check before finalizing the adoption. It can take up to 4 days for applications to process. Our adoption fee can vary based on species and age. This is a volunteer program and we do not have resources to contact every applicant at times - if you have not received a response within one week, please check the website for status updates on the pet you applied for.

  • I am very disappointed in Mother Gaia adoption process. I understand this is a small adoption facility and one person cannot contact every adoption application. It was very clear on the website NOT to contact Mother Gaia directly. I put an application in for a kitty 3/25 and on 3/30 the website was updated that cat would be at Petsmart 4/1 for adoption. I called Petsmart the evening of 3/31and team member said to call back 4/1 to talk to adoptions. I called 4/1 and spoke to adoption, I was advised it was first come first serve. I explained that I put an app in and don't know why he is there! I was advised again it's first come first serve. I said in my opinion I am first and I am not getting served and I don't want someone else to come into Petsmart and adopt him before my app is reviewed and there should have been a holding period. I said I would drive up now to get him. She huffed and said I would not because the kitty will most likely not get adopted because he is hissing and snapping at people. I explained according to the bio and pictures he is shy and will warm up and I would like to meet him. She said okay you can come down to meet him 4/2 but again its first come first serve. I told her again in my opinion I am first and not getting served. Then she finally explained that the person in charge was on vacation and it's up to Mother Gaia to make the finally call. I followed the website for a month and kitty was till available. I received NO email or phone call from Mother Gaia. I had decided a year ago to add to our growing family and rescue another kitty that would fit our family. Mother Gaia is the worst adoption agency I have gone though.
