The Humane Society of Atlantic County was established as an animal shelter in 1968. Our mission is to: Curb pet over-population through our clinic's spay and neuter programs; Increase the number of animals adopted into loving homes through our shelter; Provide a safe and caring environment for animals that are lost or strayed; Serve as a resource for humane animal education within our community. Our organization strives to improve and protect the lives of companion animals by promoting healthy relationships between pets and people.
The adoption process starts with an Adoption Pre-Screen Application. While anyone is welcome to visit the shelter and see what animals are here, an approved Adoption Application is required to take an animal out or to put your name as an interested party should the animal not be ready yet. You will need: If you rent, we will need to see a complete lease with any pet clause. If you own your home, we can typically access that record online or you can bring documentation with you. If you have other pets, they will need to be current on veterinary care and need to come in for a meet and greet (dog) with a potential new animal. You will need to provide your current veterinarian contact information. Adoption fees include Spay/Neuter, Vaccines, Micro-chip, Leash, Collar, Dewormers, and testing for Heartworm/Lyme (dog) or Felv/FIV (cat). Once we receive your application, a staff member will review it. This can take a few days, depending on the volume of applications received. We will contact you if there is additional information needed. Once approved, we will contact you and then you can more easily few our animals either now or in the near future. When you find an animal you want to adopt, we will again review the application to ensure the animal you have picked is appropriate for your home based on the information you provided on the application.
