Naws - Mokena Pet Shelter

Our Mission is to end pet homelessness, suffering, and unnecessary pet euthanasia - to serve pets in need - and to promote treating all animals with respect and dignity. We do this by changing the face of animal welfare and elevating the status of pets in our lives and society.

Adoption Process

If you are interested in meeting some of our Cats at the NAWS Campus, viewing hours begin at 12noon daily until closing which is 7pm weeknights, 4pm Saturdays, and 2pm on Sundays. If you are interested in meeting some of our Dogs - NAWS has many wonderful volunteers and staff members that enjoy showing our adoptable pups off at events, or at our Campus, and due to the fact that we have many dogs and many humans that care for them, it is our goal to avoid confusion when it comes to the adoption process and we have therefore outlined a simple process for people that are interested in adopting a dog to begin the meet and greet process. NAWS is not an animal shelter, we are a no-kill humane society that has rescued cats and dogs available for adoption. We rarely have puppies and most of our dogs are 1-3 years old. Our dogs are primarily located in foster homes, and some of our cats are housed at the NAWS Campus and at partner stores. You can view most of our dogs on our website at www.NAWSUS.org. We try our best to keep the website up to date. Adoption fees vary depending on age, health, temperament, breed but generally average $275. Adoption fees include the pet's spay/neuter surgery, microchip, heartworm and fecal tests, dewormings, vaccines, and any other vetting that takes place prior to adoption. Our pet adoption process is designed with the purpose of finding the best match for both the pet and the people. We believe that to do this properly, for dogs in particular, people need to make an appointment with one of our adoption counselors to meet at NAWS. To start, we ask that you e-mail a Dog Adoption Application which will allow you to provide the criteria you are looking for in a dog, and that will help us narrow down a list of potential matches and coordinate a meeting with you at NAWS. We understand that in an instant gratification society this is a frustrating process for some people, but we have been in the industry long enough to know what is best for both the pets and the people, and there are fewer returned adoptions or bad experiences if people take their time to find the right fit. Our adoption counselors truly do work with people's schedules to make an appointment quickly.
