Macon County Animal Control And Care Center - Decatur Pet Shelter

The Macon County Animal Control and Care Center is a municipal facility under the direct supervision of the Macon County Sheriff's Office. Not only is the center committed to finding adoptable animals homes, they are also committed to the enforcement and prosecution of animal abuse. Our Mission is to do everything practical to assist in life preservation of animals within our community. Unfortunately, part of our operation does include euthanizing animals under certain conditions when all other options have failed. Our trained personnel limit the number of animals euthanized when at all possible. That being said, we are not a "no kill" facility. However, rest assured all is done within our means to avoid this task when possible. We are the only "open admissions" facility in Macon County and that means no Macon County animal is ever turned away from the shelter regardless of health, age, breed or temperament. Most of the animals entering our shelter are lost or owner surrenders. The remaining are comprised of animals seized by Animal Control Officers in animal cruelty/neglect cases or code enforcement cases. Being the only open admission public animal shelter in Macon County means we never stop taking in animals, never take a breather on intake for a week, and we never limit new animals even if we have staff shortage. Therefore, in order to treat every savable animal, significant resources are needed. This is why our partnership with the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation is so critical. We are extremely Thankful for all of our valued partnerships with various rescues groups, Humane Society, Homeward Bound, enthusiastic adopters, army of compassionate volunteers, dedicated foster homes and the generosity of many Macon County donors and supporters.

IEBR rescues dogs from shelters and puppymills and accepts dogs from owners who for any reason can no longer provide a home for their bully.
