Homeward Bound Pet Shelter - Decatur Pet Shelter

Homeward Bound Pet Shelter

Homeward Bound Pet Shelter, an MRI program, shelters and rehabilitates over 400 cats and dogs each year until they can be permanently adopted into loving homes while providing job training opportunities to individuals with disabilities. In July 2005, Homeward Bound became a division of MRI (Macon Resources, Inc). This partnership between human services and a pet shelter is the only one of its kind in the country. Homeward Bound Pet Shelter is a no-kill shelter. Homeward Bound maintains a stress-free environment for cats and dogs while they wait for their new families. Cats are free to roam in their rooms, and dogs have visiting rooms and a fenced outside play area. All animals are spayed/neutered, kept up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. Plus, they’ve been tested for heartworms or feline leukemia/FIV and kept on monthly flea control and heartworm protection.

Adoption Process

Adopting a shelter pet is a rewarding experience. The decision to adopt is one that involves a lifelong commitment and not something to be taken lightly. Anyone who wants to adopt a pet from Homeward Bound Pet Shelter must first fill out an application. A $20 hold fee is required to hold a specific pet for you while your application is being processed. If the application is approved, the hold fee is applied to the adoption fee. Most applications can be processed within 72 hours; a minimum 24-hour wait period is required between application and adoption. During this time, Homeward Bound staff will confirm that the information given is correct and meets our adoption criteria. In the event an application is denied, the reasons will not be disclosed to the applicant. We will conduct an informal interview and observe you along with your family/household members with the pet. Veterinary references are necessary, additional pre-adoption requirements may apply for applicants with no veterinary history. In some cases, a home visit is required. Specific requirements may apply for individual pets. You must sign a contract and pay an adoption fee at the time you take your pet home. Cash, personal check, and debit or credit cards are accepted forms of payment. The welfare of the animals in our care is our number one concern, we take great measures to ensure a proper match between the pet and its new home. After completing your application, you can bring it in to Homeward Bound, fax to 217-876-1604, or scan and email it to: hbps@maconresources.org. Completed applications can also be mailed to: HBPS, PO Box 3831, Decatur, IL 62524. Hold/processing fees can be paid by phone with a debit/credit card. Cash or check also accepted.
