K-9 Angels Rescue - Houston Pet Shelter

K-9 Angels Rescue

K-9 Angels Rescue is committed to rescuing and rehoming shelter dogs in and around the City of Houston, regardless of their breed or their circumstance. We are motivated by the dire need to educate the public about the effects of irresponsible breeding practices, while helping the community by alleviating overcrowding in area shelters. As we believe proper health care of one’s pet is a requirement of good ownership, K-9 Angels Rescue only adopts out dogs that have been fully vetted and altered. Our organization is an all-breed, non-profit canine rescue. We received our 501(c)(3) status in February 2012. Our collective of 350+ volunteers are compassionate, companion animal welfare advocates dedicated to contributing their time, skills, finances, and experience. Many of our core volunteers bring along years of experience from their previous service with other Houston rescue groups. In turn, their commitments help to save the lives of the abandoned, abused, homeless, neglected, orphaned, rejected, stray, and owner-surrendered dogs in Houston's animal control facilities. K-9 Angels Rescue Board Members & Volunteers are 100% VOLUNTEER and receive NO compensation. Our organization is not a shelter in the sense that we are not positioned to accept dogs from the public. We personally select our dogs from the greater Houston animal control facilities where healthy, adoptable dogs are destroyed every day simply because they have no home, no family, to call their own. A dog selected into our rescue program remains in our care until adopted. Only when we are able to secure the best match between dog and new caregiver(s) is the dog released from our program. We believe in the proven benefits of foster homes. A foster home provides the dog with a loving, safe environment and allows for behavioral observations, training and modifications. Fostering creates opportunities to see how the dog interacts with the human, and the furry, family members. When a foster family is not available our dogs may be boarded during the week until transported to our Adoption Center on Saturday morning.

Adoption Process

The Application Process consists of: Understanding your responsibilities as the guardian of an adopted companion animal and your lifetime commitment to that animal. There are tons of things that one needs to consider before committing to adopting a pet. The key is to acknowledge that by adopting a pet, you’re taking on another life, and that life is your responsibility. You’re in control of where they go, what they do, what they eat, when they eat, etc. You’re also in control of their quality of life. If you believe you’re unable to give another being a good quality of life, then you should not be taking on that responsibility. Too many pets are bought and given to people who are not prepared for the responsibility of ownership. Be a loving, caring guardian, and get a pet when you’re ready for it. Determining the type of dog that best fits your lifestyle so that you are able, and prepared, to afford the time and expense to provide the environment in which it can thrive to its potential. One of the most important aspects of adopting a pet is identifying how you’re going to mesh with the animal. If your lifestyle keeps you away from home for the majority of the day then that’s a limiting factor with regard to what kind of pet you should get. If you get a dog, that dog will need to be let outside about midway through the day, fed morning and night, and maybe a half-mile walk in the afternoon. This would be around the minimum for maintenance with regard to a dog. They also have needs with regard to general attention, play, and socialization. All of these take significant amounts of time. If you don’t have the time, or can’t give up the time, then a dog is not right for you. If you decide to explore other lower maintenance pet options, there are many to choose from. Some of these might be an exotic pet, or a more common pet, like a house cat. Reviewing our dogs and cats currently available for adoption helps you determine the degree to which your lifestyle will meet/exceed the needs of the animal. You can HELP EXPEDITE the application process! As a result of HIPPA laws it has become increasingly difficult to obtain the information we need from vet offices and online pharmacies. We are now asking ALL APPLICANTS to reach out to your vet once you submit an application and for you to send us your last 2 years of vet records INCLUDING heart worm prevention purchase history. This applies to both living and deceased pets. If you purchase your heart worm prevention from an online source, please obtain that purchase history as well. If your pet(s) is/are under 2 years of age, submit records to date. E-mail this information to [email protected] being sure that your name and the dog’s name(s) that you are interested in are in the subject line of your e-mail so that we can match it to your application. ONCE WE RECEIVE YOUR RECORDS we will begin processing your application. Thank you for assisting us in this process and for acknowledging the overpopulation of dogs in the Houston area. We will contact you via e-mail if approved, and/or with additional questions only when necessary. If YOU DO NOT RECEIVE AN APPROVAL within 10 calendar days your application was not approved.
