The Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County originally chartered in 1968 and underwent reorganization from 1997 to 1998. Charles Hand, a local businessman, rented to the Humane Society a building for seven years from which we could conduct sheltering operations. Contrary to popular belief, the Humane Society is not “funded” by the city or county, and sadly, the expense of caring for the rising number of homeless animals in our community far exceeded our income, which forced us to close our doors in 2003. Without a building to maintain, we were able to refocus our energy & resources on pro-active programs & services to better serve the animals & people in our community. We have helped thousands of homeless pets & pet owners since 2003 & will continue to do so in the coming years. However, the euthanasia rate at the local county shelter continued to weigh heavy on our hearts. We partnered with Animal Control & Adoption Service in January 2009 in an effort to help the shelter reduce euthanasia & increase adoptions. While the partnership increased adoptions by about 25%, the shelter was still forced to euthanize approximately 77% of its animal residents, which equates to nearly 90 per week and nearly twice the national average. Our inability to truly impact those statistics in a big way with our current programs prompted us to take a huge step in the most proactive direction possible. A building located at 940 Tennessee Avenue was purchased in 2010, which is now the home of the Humane Society’s administrative offices and new Spay-Neuter Clinic, which opened it’s doors to the public in August 2017. Using the Humane Alliance model, which has assisted 100+ groups to successfully open & operate high quality low-cost spay-neuter clinics across the country, our clinic has spayed & neutered nearly 7,000 dogs and cats from August 2017 – February 2019. The clinic is open to all families regardless of income, and we serve pet owners and rescue groups from any geographic location so long as you can get the animals to us.
Adoption Fees: Fees typically range from $85 -$150 and vary per animal based on a variety of factors including species, age, breed, sponsorship, expenses, etc. Fees include vet check, vaccinations, rabies, deworm, heartworm test for dogs, feline leukemia/AIDS test for cats, and spay/neuter. If a pet is too young to be spayed/neutered at the time of adoption, state law requires a bond be levied. This bond is $50 and is 100% refundable upon proof that your new pet has been spayed/neutered no later than 4 months of age. Spay/neuter is mandatory for all animals & will be closely monitored. Adoption Application and a signed Adoption Agreement are required for all adoptions. Our goal is to place our rescued animals in homes that best suit the animals’ emotional & physical needs. These needs vary from animal to animal, so there are no “specific” requirements (i.e. fenced in yards, no young children, etc.). The Humane Society reserves the right to refuse adoption to any family whom it believes will not be able to meet the needs of the individual pet applied for. Prior to completing an application, we strongly encourage you to look beyond the cute face in the picture… please read the pet’s bio carefully to ensure he/she sounds like a good match for your family. To respect the privacy of our foster homes & to ensure the safety of the pets in our care, visits with pets & their foster families are arranged only after an application has been given the seal of approval by our adoption coordinator. An Adoption Application must be completed & emailed back to us (preferred & most timely); faxed or snail mailed applications are also accepted but might take longer to process. Once your application is received, it will be forwarded to our adoption coordinator for review, and you might be contacted by phone or email to answer additional questions. If you have a pet in mind that you’d love to meet, EMAIL US for an adoption application! Your veterinary & personal references will likely be contacted. And finally, a home visit will be scheduled, which involves a volunteer scheduling a mutually convenient time to visit your home. The home visit allows us to meet your family & see where your new pet would be spending his days & nights. We strive to complete this process & notify potential adopter’s within 48 hours, but it could be less or more depending on workload & how long it takes to get in touch with references. We thank you for your patience during this process!
