Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation Inc. - Mechanicsburg Pet Shelter

The Helen O. Krause Animal Foundation, Inc. (HOKAFI) is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter for abandoned, abused and stray dogs and cats located in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The shelter is run primarily by a dedicated corps of volunteers and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation depends entirely on the private sector for funding through donations, membership dues, grants and fundraising activities. The shelter, founded by the late Helen Opperman Krause, now sits on approximately two acres of landscaped grounds in a rural community and consists of a state-of-the-art main cat shelter built in 1999, a recently remodeled cat shelter annex and a dog kennel. At any given time, this complex is home to as many as 100 cats and kittens and 10 dogs. In her book, "No More Pets", Helen recalls the poet Horace's admonishment: "Abridge your hopes in proportion to the shortness of the span of human life...'I plan this year to make the best of whatever comes along, and find happiness'." she reflects. "Each day is a precious gift ... I will be content and happy in my own little world, the hills ... the woodlands close at hand, the trees overhead, the birds, a whole glorious universe all about me." Helen has profoundly enriched that universe by sharing herself and her lessons from life with us. And through her example, and the Foundation she inspired, she has left an enduring legacy to the generations to come.

Adoption Process

HOKAFI makes every effort possible to place each dog and cat in the right home for that particular dog or cat. We take lots of time to get to know each and every dog and cat so we can tell you what we have observed about their personalities as so many of the animals we care for do not come with any history. We have an application process. The application asks information that helps us determine whether your home would be the right one for that dog or cat. If the application is found to be a good match for one of our dogs then we will schedule a home visit by one of our volunteers. If the application is found to be a good match for one of our cats then we will schedule a time for you to come to HOKAFI to pick up the cat. Since we are a shelter that primarily accepts strays, we have set very high criteria for choosing the right homes for our dogs and cats. We are exceptionally careful as we must always have the best interest of the dogs and cats in mind. It is our job to protect and insure the happiest, safest possible future for all of the dogs and cats who come through our doors. Each and every one of them is precious to us and we take our responsibilities to them very seriously. If there is ever a problem with any dog or cat adopted from us, whatever the reason, we take the dog or cat back. We make a lifetime commitment to the animals that we rescue. You may not give the dog or cat to anyone else for any reason. Please note that before applying for one of our dogs or cats you need to be certain that you understand and agree with this requirement.

Cynthia was a devoted animal welfare advocate whose untimely departure from this earth as a result of a battle with cancer was a tragedy to both two and four-legged friends, and she will be dearly missed. Cynthia’s generous bequest provided the startup funds to establish Molly’s Place Rescue, as a tr

Homeward Bound is a small organization that was formed in November 2006 out of a love for dogs. The group has evolved over the years and has become more focused on the type of rescue work we feel compelled to do. We primarily pull pregnant dogs or dogs who have just delivered their puppies. I was shocked to find out that pregnant dogs are almost always euthanized because they are deemed unadopt
