Adoption Process

Step One: Application. If you see a cat or kitten that sparks your interest, we invite you to fill out an application. All our cats and kittens are in foster homes, so this step must be completed first. Once received, we will put you in contact with the foster home to start the process of adopting your new best friend. Step Two: Meet and Greet. During this step, everyone gets to meet! The main goal is for you to know the kitty, and us to get to know you as the future pet parent. It's also great opportunity to ask any questions you may have that will help you make a decision about adopting. A few things to know: We ask that all family members or roommates who live in the home be present for the Meet and Greet. As a rule, we don't do "same day" adoptions. Instead, we encourage you to take a day or two to give some careful consideration to your decision. Step Three: Reference Check. As part of your application, you will provide three references who can speak to your ability to care for an animal. Non-family members are preferred. Also, if you have a current vet, we also ask for their information, so we can contact them for some insights. Step Four: Home Check. Before finalizing the adoption, we will want to see where the new member of your family will spend their time. A Grassroots Animal Rescue volunteer will come over to your house for a tour. It is another great opportunity to ask any questions you might have about getting the new kitty settled in - things to make them comfortable, thoughts on where to place the litter box, and so on. Step Five: Adoption! On the day of adoption, a Grassroots Animal Rescue adoption counselor will bring the cat or kitten to your home. First, if not already completed, you'll do the home check. Next comes getting the kitty comfortable in a secure area - whenever introducing a new cat into the home, it's a good idea to have their own room, where they can learn to feel secure and safe in your home. Lastly, you'll finalize the adoption, including completing the adoption contract and submitting the adoption fee.
