Friends Of The Alameda Animal Shelter - Alameda Pet Shelter

FAAS was founded in 2009 by a small group of volunteers dedicated to raising funds for the medical care for the animals at the Alameda Animal Shelter. In 2011, the volunteer group expanded to launch a “Save Our Shelter” campaign when city budget cuts were forcing the closure of the shelter. After several months of discussions with city officials, FAAS took over the management of the Alameda Shelter on January 1, 2012. The group expanded again and there are now 13 full- and part-time staff and more than 150 volunteers providing daily care to the more than 60 animals at the shelter. FAAS is governed by a Board of Directors composed of individuals who either live or work in Alameda.

Adoption Process

You must be at least 21, have valid state-issued identification, be allowed to have a pet where you live, and submit an application. Please be prepared to spend at least one hour completing your adoption. FAAS believes in an adoption process that carefully matches the lifestyle and expectations of our adopters with the needs of our animals. This helps ensure a successful adoption and that pets remain in their new homes for the rest of their lives. When you express an interest in adoption, our staff will ask you questions about what you are looking for, your home, your lifestyle, and your household in order to suggest appropriate pets or to determine a specific animal's suitability. We encourage you to get to know the animal in which you are interested. Ideally, everyone in the household will come down to the shelter to meet the potential adoptee. If you already have a dog at home, we require that your dog meet the new dog before the adoption is completed; a shelter representative will bring the new dog to your home for a meeting, or the dogs can meet at a park near the shelter if you prefer. We reserve the right to require these meetings to ensure our animals find a good forever fit. We also reserve the right to ask to see your rental agreement stating that you can have a pet. In most cases, pets can go home the same day. We're sorry, but in order to find homes for our animals as quickly as possible, we do not place holds.
