Companion Animal Rescue & Educational Services - Phoenix Pet Shelter

Companion Animal Rescue & Educational Services

Companion Animal Rescue & Educational Services is a 501(c)3 Non Profit (Pending) organization made up of all volunteers sharing concern and passion for the sad situation of homeless animals. Located in the state of Arizona, we work primarily in the Phoenix Metropolitan area and outlying communities. There are satellite advisors in the Flagstaff and Tucson areas as well. Our contact with the public is generated through the Internet, Adoption and Fundraising events, literature, private consultations and referrals, as well as our work with and support of other rescue organizations in our state. Our primary goal is to match rescued, adoptable dogs and cats with caring families who’s desire is to provide a loving and safe environment for them for the rest of their natural lives. This is a task done with great enthusiasm and respect for the displaced animal’s needs. Education of the Public is of great importance to C.A.R.E.S. Many of the unwanted and abused animals in our community suffer from behavioral and health issues that the previous care givers could not handle. With education on how to properly train, provide positive guidelines, and how to care for the special needs of the four legged family member, a happy home environment is just a ‘pet’ away.

Adoption Process

We have an adoption process that helps us to reach our goal stated above. It’s not a perfect tool, but it is the best tool we have to place animals in their forever home. So please be honest with yourself, your family and C.A.R.E.S. while going through this process, because Your decisions affect a helpless, innocent life. Application: You fill out our application, so we can get to know you a little better. Review: The foster family fully reviews your application and checks your references. This can take a day or more, but usually less that a week. Home Inspection: We do home inspections to insure that a potential home is safe for a dog or cat to live in. This lasts about half an hour. The adoptable is not present for this step. Meet and Greet: This is required when there are already animals living with you to ensure happy and positive introductions between your pets and the adoptable. The meet and greet takes place in a neutral location like a park or other public area, that neither dog frequents. Play Date: The play date is for you, your family and the adoptable to spend some private time together and get to know each other a little more. This takes place in your home and lasts around 4 hours. Sleep Over: If all has gone well so far, then the adoptable gets to spend one night in your home with you and your family. This step furthers the familiarity for everyone involved. Foster to Adopt: It takes 2 weeks or more, depending upon everone’s schedules, to arrive at this stage, because we space out the meetings, so as to not over stress the animal with rapid-fire meetings. Now, the dog will stay with you as a foster for a period of 4 to 8 weeks. This will allow you to evaluate long term interactions within your family concerning the adoptable. Contract: The contract finalizes and legalizes the adoption. The adoption processing fee of $175 dollars is due at signing, but even after adoption process is over, C.A.R.E.S. group members are always only just an email or phone call away, if you ever have questions or concerns! We have veterinary support and certified dog traininers in our ranks to help you with any problems regarding your new family member. We are in this for the long haul with you.
