We have been in the business of helping birds in the Kansas City area as Burge Bird Services, an avian veterinary practice, since 1990. Burge Bird Rescue is an IRS and state approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue organization. We take in over 300 companion birds every year and help find them new homes. Some of these birds need medical or surgical care that the owners cannot pay for, some of them are "too loud" or "too messy", and some have just become "inconvenient". Help us help the birds by looking thru our available adoptees and see if one of them is right for you! We believe that all animals deserve a safe, healthy, and happy home, and we are doing our part to help make that happen. We serve the Kansas City area, and give preference to our clients when placing birds for adoption, but we will consider anyone in Missouri or Kansas (and occasionally other nearby states) who is willing to drive to our location and who passes the application and interview. Dr. Julie Burge is a 1987 graduate of the University of Missouri in Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine. Although she started out seeing dogs, cats, and other small mammals, she soon realized that birds were the animals on which she wanted to focus her veterinary career. She started Burge Bird Services in Kansas City in 1990, and has grown it to be the only exclusively avian practice in the area. Dr. Julie is also very interested in disaster response since being involved with birds rescued from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She has deployed to multiple natural and manmade disasters to help all animals. The rest of our staff consists of bird lovers, or those who enjoy working with birds even though they may not have any at home. Many of our clients have met Aubrey, the technician, Brittani, the receptionist and adoption coordinator, Susan, the sanctuary manager, and Tammy and Tia who help keep the birds and the rest of the place clean and healthy. We also welcome volunteers who help make toys, sort feathers to sell as a fundraiser, or hand out treats.
