Before looking into adoption from our organization, PLEASE be aware that we are not like most rescues. Our mission and passion is education about our beloved breed AND excellent standards of care that will enable you, the adopter, to be the best advocate for your dog(s) that you can be. We are not looking for perfection or reasons to disqualify you for adoption! We are looking for patient, open minded individuals that will welcome the information we have to share and be willing to discuss and address any concerns we have prior to adoption.
First Step: Required Reading: We’ll have you read some important information regarding nutrition, vaccines, etc. You must familiarize yourself with this information and be willing to give your adopted dog the same high level of care they have received from our organization. Also, if you have never owned a dachshund you must thoroughly research the breed to familiarize yourself with their specific needs. Step Two: Fill Out The Adoption Application: We’ll have you fill out, in detail, an adoption application and return it through email. These applications are designed to help us determine the type of dog that would fit you best, as well as get to know a little bit about you. Just like people, individual dogs have distinct personalities. Some like nothing more than curling up on the sofa; while others get bored if they can’t spend a lot of time playing with you or with other dogs each day. Some dogs prefer a quiet home, while others love the happy chaos of a big family. You will have a chance to state your preferences on the application too. Could you work with a dog that is not completely housebroken? Do you need a dog who doesn’t mind cats? Are you experienced enough to train a lively dachshund who wants to be top dog in your home? You will also be asked to provide a veterinarian reference if you have, or have had, any other pets. In general, we will not place a dachshund in a home with dogs that have not been neutered or spayed, unless there is a legitimate medical reason the surgery has not been performed. Step Three: References / Phone Interview / Home Visit: Once we have evaluated your application, we will check your references and talk with you by phone, e-mail or both. The next step is the home visit. We will come to your home and meet with you and all your family members, to talk about adoption. If you currently have a dog we will more than likely bring a dachshund or two with us to see how your dog interacts with dogs he/she does not know. This visit gives you a chance to ask any questions you might have and talk with us about what you can expect when you rescue a dachshund. Step Four: Meet Adoptable Dachshunds (Sometimes combined with Step Three – depending on the dog(s)): You will be able to meet the dachshund before you adopt. We will set up a time and place for you to meet and interact with the dachshund(s) we’ve discussed with you, to see if they’re a good fit for your family and have you bring any current dog that you own with you. This meeting will more than likely be on neutral territory for all dogs involved. Step Five: Adoption: Once the adoption has been set up, the next step is getting your new dachshund to you. Since we work full time jobs, and have families and dogs of our own, we have to work around everyone’s schedules, so please be patient. When you receive your new dog and have paid the adoption fee, we will require that you sign an adoption contract, which states that you will provide appropriate care for the dog and will never give the dog to anyone but the rescue representative, should it become necessary for you to place the dog elsewhere at any time. The contract also specifies that we have ascertained that the dog is healthy and up to date on preventative care required. Any medical problems we are aware of are described in the contract. We also turn over all veterinarian records we have for the dog to you, so that your vet knows the dog’s health background and any and all procedures that have been done.
