The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is a private nonprofit organization whose mission is to build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness. Founded in 1879, the Wisconsin Humane Society has been saving the lives of animals in need for more than 140 years. WHS is a 501(c)(3) organization and operates animal shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door and Brown Counties, as well as a spay/neuter clinic in West Allis. WHS annually serves 40,000 animals. We receive no general government funding and we are not part of any national umbrella organization.
To ensure that WHS animals and adopters are properly matched, we have a few adoption guidelines. 1. Each potential adopter will complete an Adopter Profile that will be reviewed by an adoption counselor and will stay on file for 2 months. 2. A Photo ID with current address will be requested by the adoption counselor. If address does not match, please bring in proof of current address (ex. Utility bill or other bills). 3. The adoption counselor will ask questions regarding your residence, family members living in the household and other animals living in the home to ensure the best match is made.
