Our mission is to relieve the suffering of and prevent cruelty to animals, and to increase humane education in the Winona area. The Winona Area Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The WAHS relies on donations to cover the cost of caring for the animals and operating the facility. The WAHS is governed by a board of directors, employs 8 people, and relies on volunteers to help keep the shelter running and the animals safe. It is the WAHS policy to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection. The WAHS is a no-kill shelter and therefore has no time frame on the amount of time an animal can remain on-site. The organization seeks to return lost animals and find homes for animals without owners. The WAHS actively works against breed-specific discrimination and will never discriminate against any animal based on breed, type, color, height, weight, or disability. The WAHS follows research-based standards prescribed by experts in the shelter care field while maintaining adherence to our organization’s goals, policies, and procedures. Each animal under the facility’s care is spayed or neutered and will receive the necessary medical care. The WAHS does not receive funding from the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society.

We are a foster based rescue. Right now we are only taking in kittens of any age. I have been helping rescue kittens for over 30 years. I started when I was very young. Our kittens are cared for in foster homes and adopted out from foster homes.
