Mission Statement: Provide shelter, safety and food for the orphaned and abused animals of Washington County with the goal of placing them in loving homes. Provide public education about the humane care and treatment of animals. Provide affordable veterinary outpatient services including spaying or neutering. Investigate and resolve abuse cases in the best interests of the animal and community. The Washington Area Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, meaning we do not euthanize animals to make room for other animals. We pride ourselves on giving every animal a chance at a loving permanent home regardless of age or medical condition. 98% of the animals WAHS intakes are from Washington County. WAHS is 100% funded by private contributions and donations. We take in on average 1,000 animals and investigates over 300 abuse cases annually.
1. Fill Out an Application. 2. The WAHS staff will review the application. Allow 2-3 days for applications to be reviewed. 3. The WAHS takes three qualified application per pet. We review applications and choose the top three applicants. 4. If the application is approved the WAHS will call the potential adopter and a meet and greet will be scheduled. The WAHS cannot call every single family that applies for a pet. If an adopter has not heard back, they can assume your application was not chosen. 5. After the meet and greets are done the WAHS will determine which home is the best fit for the animal and schedule an adoption pick-up. Some animals only have one application, and the process moves more quickly. 6. For those who had a meet and greet and did not get chosen they will be contacted by the WAHS staff. The WAHS will hold their application for 30 days if they would like to meet another pet. They do not automatically get another pet. The process works the same for the next pet they are interested in.
