The Spencer County Animal Control Shelter opened October 17th, 2012. It is funded by County tax dollars. Each of the seven Incorporated Towns also contributes monetary support based on their population. The shelter is centrally located, on County Highway Garage property at Chrisney. The animal shelter has two part-time County employees. It is co-managed by two individuals from the Animal Control Board. These two persons volunteer their administrative time and are not paid. The Animal Control Board oversees the entire operation. It consists of seven individuals, appointed by the Spencer County Commissioners. It meets on the 4th Thursday of each month except December. The Board Meetings are at Hilltop Veterinary Clinic in Lamar and begin at 5:00 pm local time. The animal shelter only accepts dogs and cats. At the end of the first, six month period, the placement rate was 93%. This high rate can be attributed to Rescue Groups, both local and afar. Some states have strict Spay/Neuter Laws, so their shelters have fewer animals.

We are an organized Not-for-Profit, private organization. We have been in existence since 1998. Our county does not have any type of animal control or shelter. Spencer County Humane Society Board Members are all volunteers and we work out of our homes. Foster families help us board our animals until placement.
