Southpaws was founded in 2008, as one of the earliest rescues formed on the basis of a transport model; rescuing dogs in danger of euthanasia in overcrowded, overwhelmed shelters in Southern states, and transporting them to New England where they would ultimately have better chances at finding a good home. We remain true to this basic mission and all our dogs originate in public shelters. Typically, before they ever meet their potential forever family, their journey has included a foster home in their place of origin, routine and often more extensive veterinary care, healing, nourishment, beginning to experience life in a home, lessons in trust, a major interstate transport, a second foster home in the North, assessments and sometimes having several names along the way, in addition to the one you are thinking of giving your new pet. As our name would indicate, Southpaws is an all-breed rescue. We have placed all kinds of dogs, from Chihuahuas to mastiffs, puppies to toothless seniors, dogs for first-timers and dogs with complex special needs. We love all the breeds, but our favorite is definitely mutts.
