Second Hand Seniors is accepting foster applications for 2010. Fostering a senior dog requires a long term committment and sometimes a lifetime committment. Some seniors will be terminally ill when they enter our program. SHS strives to offer them a safe place to live out their days. SHS accepts senior and special needs dogs from high kill shelters in the state of Texas and owner surrenders IF the dog is a senior and the owner has died or is entering a nursing home and can not care for their pet. Second Hand Seniors also has a program to keep senior dogs with their senior owners (income based).
Adopting a pet should be a lifetime committment. Some pets can live to be 20 years old. This should be taken into consideration when adopting a pet. Second Hand Seniors offers senior and special needs pets for adoption. Both require special care and a high degree of responsibility - which can include an increase financial responsibility. We do not make one day adoptions. Our adoption process can take several weeks to complete. The first step in the adoption process is the completion of the adoption application. The application will then be reviewed. If we believe there is a strong possibility of a positive adoption outcome and we believe that outcome is in the best interest of the pet, we will contact your vet reference. If the vet reference check has a positive outcome, we will arrange a meet and greet for you and the pet. Most of our pets are in foster care and we limit intrusions on our fosters to only those where a positive adoption outcome is likely. After the meet and greet, we will schedule a home visit. After the home visit is concluded, the adoption application will be approved or denied. In order to provide the best care possible and the safest placement process, Second Hand Seniors accepts only a limited number of senior and special needs pets in our program.
