Orange County Pit Bull Rescue (OCPBR) is a non-profit organization formed in 2010. Founder Rebekah Yusko had envisioned a Pit Bull specific rescue and advocacy organization to build more of a centralized effort that focused on the breed. There are too many Pit Bulls in Orange County that are dying in shelters or languishing in “no-kill” facilities. OCPBR grew out of the need to save these dogs and give them the second chances they deserve. Our current President Christine Bonner continues our mission today, we are focused now more than ever on not only rescue work, but advocacy, education, community outreach and owner support. Our organization has a small group of foster homes that are experienced with the breed and can offer them the care they need in order to thrive. All of the dogs are rescued from shelters or as strays and stay in loving foster homes until they are adopted. We focus on quality over quantity with our adoptions. While we want to rescue as many dogs as we can-we’re not about numbers. We want to be comfortable with our placements and proud of the homes we give our dogs. Not only do we rescue dogs, but we also serve as advocates for Pit Bulls. Every time we have an event, we are representing this breed. Every dog we choose to rescue is going to represent this breed. We strive to give the public the much needed information about Pit Bulls in order to dispel ignorant myths; but also to portray these dogs positively and accurately. As the first and only Pit Bull specific organization in Orange County, CA, we have also become an invaluable resource to our community. We offer advice and resources to the public to help keep their dogs safe and happy. While we are unable to take in every dog, we can help find a constructive way for someone to keep their dog, or, if all possibilities have been exhausted, we will help them find a responsible loving home for their pet. Our goal is to be a support to our community, offering resources and guidance to make this a positive environment for Pit Bulls so they can be happy and loving members of the family.
We have an application process that will first help determine a good match for your family. All of our dogs are in foster care, which helps us really get to know the personality of each dog and their personal needs. After we receive your application, we will ask and answer any questions that may come up, and set up a time for you to meet your potential new best friend! The next step in the process is a home visit with the adoptable dog. Don’t worry it’s not an inspection, we just want to make sure our dogs go to responsible and safe homes. The best part of this is that it helps everyone to see the dog in your own environment, and have an extra chance to bond with them to see if they feel like a good match for your family. We will take the time with you to make sure to answer any questions and make sure you feel comfortable about adopting. If you have completely fallen in love with the dog and we all see a great match, then we will schedule a convenient time to bring your new friend home permanently! You will be provided with all of their medical records, adoption contract and literature for your new friend. We provide training sessions for our foster families and are a resource to adopters to help with the transition period and making the dog a successful permanent member of your family. We recommend each adoptive family keep up the training and we ahve many wonderful trainers we can recommend from all over Orange County. Dogs adopted from OCPBR are part of our extended family and community. We will be a lifelong resource for your dog, and always maintain a supportive presence. We strive to make the best possible matches to ensure a healthy and happy life for all. Our adoption fees are considered a donation and put directly back into the rescue to continue to fund our lifesaving efforts. The dogs live in foster care funded by the rescue anywhere from one to nine months, or even a year depending on the dog. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, current on vaccinations and fed a quality diet. The cost of our foster care program per dog, usually ranges from $200-500, our adoption fee remains the same-$250 for adults and $300 for puppies. We appreciate your interest in adopting a dog. You are truly saving a life. Not only are you providing a loving forever home for a homeless Pit Bull, but you are also opening up a place for a new rescue! We are all volunteers and make a conscious effort to process each adoption efficiently and with good communication.
