Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue (NNKCR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was originally formed in 2010 by a handful of volunteers who wanted to provide a foster-based no-kill option for all dogs regardless of breed. We utilize a network of foster homes who volunteer their time. To date, Nebraska No Kill has rehomed more than 500 dogs, with a success rate of 97 percent on adoptions. We are inspired and affirmed on a daily basis by the support received from the Lincoln community, where most of our fosters and adopters reside. Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue strives to collaborate with other local rescues and has developed a strong relationship with the Capital Humane Society and other shelters across the state, often working together on hard-to-place dogs. Our volunteers are striving for the day when every dog has a safe and loving home. It’s pretty simple. The more fosters and funding we have, the more dogs we can save! Those two factors are the keys to our whole operation. Our network is growing, but the influx of dogs in need of a foster home continues. Fostering is a great way to help a dog along in his or her life’s journey with no long-term commitments and little or no financial obligation. Foster dogs are fully vetted prior to placement, and medical expenses are paid for by Nebraska No Kill Canine Rescue until an adopter is found. There are a few steps involved in the adoption process. These steps are followed to ensure the dog is going to a good home, and to ensure that the dog is a good fit for your family and situation. 1. Read the "Adoption Information" page on our website, and fill out the adoption application completely. When choosing references, try to choose people who have known you for a period of time and have been to your house. Please do not use relatives as references! 2. After submitting your application, you should hear from a volunteer within two days. The volunteer will discuss your application with you and give you more information about the dog you're interested in. 3. Your references will be checked and a home visit will be scheduled. The home visit is to meet you and ensure your living situation is safe for a dog. 4. A "meet and greet" will be arranged so you can meet the dog. If you have other dogs, they'll need to meet the new dog also. 5. If the dog appears to be a good fit for you, you can adopt the dog. There will be an adoption contract for you to sign, and an adoption donation will be collected. 6. In some cases, a "Foster to Adopt" (FTA) contract may be warranted, especially if you have other dogs/pets that the new dog will be living with. A FTA gives you up to one month to be sure the dog is working well in your home. Whenever you're ready, the FTA period can end, and an adoption contract will be signed. When beginning a FTA, we request one half of the adoption donation. The remainder of the donation will be collected when you decide to adopt the dog and sign the adoption contract. If you decide NOT to adopt the dog, the first half of the adoption donation will not be refunded.
