NHS serves Northeast Florida and beyond from our adoption and rescue facility in Fernandina Beach, Fl. We have climate-controlled dog kennels, an indoor-outdoor cattery, and outdoor play areas for the dogs. We adopted 1,337 animals in 2019, with a 97.63% save rate. We also provide animal-control services for the City of Fernandina Beach under a contract with the city. On a regular basis as space permits, we bring in rescue animals from other shelters in our general area. We provide them with socialization and medical care, including heartworm treatment, as we seek to find them loving forever homes. We also are a lifeline for animals rescued from natural disasters or large-scale abuse or neglect situations outside our area. We have rehabilitated and found homes for animals rescued after Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, and from a dog-meat farm in South Korea. We are a “no-kill” shelter and never euthanize healthy, adoptable animals for lack of space. Our dedicated staff is committed to providing quality care and socialization for all of our animals. We provide community-outreach projects such as children reading to pets, an annual holiday pet parade, and our popular Pasta for Paws fund-raiser. We maintain a community food bank to help people feed and keep their pets during times of hardship. If you’re vacationing here and miss your pets or just would like a buddy for a day, our Rent-a-Rover program is for you. We operate Aurora’s Dog Park, a community dog park adjacent to our shelter, which has received national recognition. We also operate two resale stores that are vital funding sources for us, Second Chance and Second Chance Closet. The stores are staffed primarily by volunteers, and offer new and gently-used merchandise donated by friends of NHS. We have a wonderful corps of volunteers who help walk our dogs, help socialize our dogs and cats, and provide many other services at our shelter, dog park and stores. They frequently take shelter pets to adoption events around the area with our Adoption Waggin’ program. We also have caring foster parents who open their homes and hearts to dogs and cats who need to recover from medical procedures or otherwise need time away from the shelter environment. We are grateful to all of our staff, volunteers, fosters, donors and friends - you make our life-saving mission possible!
