Mohawk Hudson Humane Society - Menands Pet Shelter

Founded in 1887, the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) is the oldest and largest animal protection organization in New York's Capital Region, serving Albany, Rensselaer and surrounding counties. In addition to providing shelter and care for stray, abused and unwanted animals, we provide an ever-increasing array of services for animals and those who care for them. These programs contributed to a 93.8% live release rate in 2020. This includes low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services, vaccination and microchip clinics, stray housing for municipalities, dog training, a pet food pantry and humane education programming for all ages.

Adoption Process

If you are looking to adopt a cat or small animal - Cat and small animal adoptions are conducted on a walk-in basis. If you prefer to have a virtual appointment, please call 518.434.8128 to schedule. Bring all household members with you to the adoption counsel. All guests are required to wear masks while on Society property, regardless of vaccination status. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the facility. You must be able bring home your new family member the same day as your meet. If you are looking to adopt a dog - Dog adoptions happen in two ways. Many dogs can go home the same day, and can be conducted on a walk-in basis. Dogs on the website with a pink border require adopters to fill out an inquiry form and may need more than one meet prior to going home. If you need to reschedule your appointment, you can do so up to 24 hours prior. Staff and volunteers set aside time to meet with you specifically. If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be asked to reschedule. On the day of your appointment, please come dressed for the weather. All dog appointments are conducted outside. There will be tents up for coverage, but appointments are held no matter the weather. Bring all household members with you to the adoption counsel, which includes resident dogs. We require our dogs to meet the dogs and all family members that live in the home to be sure that they are a compatible match. Your resident dog should have someone stay with them in your vehicle until we're ready to do the dog meet and greet. All guests are required to wear masks while on Society property, regardless of vaccination status. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the facility. Some dogs require multiple meets before going home. They are indicated on the Adopt page with a pink border. These dogs will go home on a three-week, supported, foster-to-adopt trial basis. Your dog can be adopted any time during this trial period. You will receive support from MHHS staff and volunteers to answer any questions or concerns during this three-week period.
