Medical Animals In Need - Phoenix Pet Shelter

Medical Animals In Need

We are just a group of volunteers that saw a need in our county’s shelter system- the need for providing medical care to the sick and injured animals brought into these shelters on a daily basis. We began working together to address and correct this issue. Each day, Maricopa County’s (MCACC) animal shelters take in around 150 stray or unwanted dogs, meaning kennels originally designed for one animal are typically packed with four or more. MCACC is the nation’s second largest shelter, and sadly any available space must be given to healthy, adoptable animals. M.A.I.N. is here for the injured and sick that stand no chance at all of being rescued in these shelters. We have developed close working relationships with both the east and west locations and staff regularly call to alert us to any particular animals that needs our help. We are available to these shelters and to these dogs 24/7 – and in 2012, more than 150 were saved from euthanasia as a result. After rescue, these animals are provided needed (and often costly) medical care at our partner vet in Phoenix. The animals recover in loving foster homes and once medically cleared, are placed up for adoption through M.A.I.N.

While delivering blankets to the East Maricopa County shelter, I walked past what appeared to be an empty kennel. However upon closer inspection, I noticed a tiny, white, shivering little dog huddled in the corner. Her kennel plaque stated “Stray”, although I couldn’t imagine how this little girl could possibly have gotten lost, as I was pretty sure she was around for the Last Supper. When h
