Adoption Process

Please be honest when completing this application. There are NO wrong answers. The questions are designed to help place our dogs in the right homes. If your application is approved you can expect a volunteer to contact you within 3 days of submitting. Please be patient as we are all volunteers and reach out to us at maxxandmerescue@gmail.com for updates or questions. We are based in Tampa, FL and do not do out of state adoptions. Please fill out vet info even if your dog is deceased as we call for reference. Many of our dogs come from unknown backgrounds, abuse, or neglect and for this reason we DO NOT adopt dogs to be emotional support animals. Thank you for choosing rescue!!

  • My husband and I have been contemplating getting another dog for a few months and have been looking online, as well as our local shelters. The chosen dog would not only be an addition to our family in every way, but would also double as my walking companion. We are experienced pet owners, who have rescued several dogs. We currently, have 2, one is very senior and the other 8yrs old and too small for long walks. We are not looking for a puppy, but a middle aged dog with mellow to moderate energy, out of the puppy stage. Fast forward to Waffle and the Maxx and Me Pet Rescue. Waffle was labeled an adult Golden Doodle. He did not have much of a profile, except something stupid about Waffles and Pancakes etc...however, all the boxes were checked that he was good with all things. So going off of his pics, the adult description and the fact that everything was checked off, we took the plunge and wrote a very nice email telling them about our home, the reason we were looking to adopt, and to inquire further about Waffle. The 2 sentence email I received back was abrupt, scolding and completely insulting, and I quote, "Waffle is definitely not an appropriate choice with older dogs in the home. He is "wide open" and would be way to much." Please understand, we were not angry about the fact that Waffle wasn't a good fit, but rather the manner in which it was told to us. As I explained earlier, he had no profile explaining he was WIDE OPEN, his exact age was not stated, just that he was an adult and everything was checked off that he was good with all things...We felt like children being scolded for wanting dessert before dinner... I wrote back to express my outrage over the unprofessional response we had received. Where was their decorum? Where was our, "Thank You" for our show of interest in Waffle? How 'bout instead of insulting our intelligence, you admit and apologize for his lack of profile, which suddenly exists today, I might add. How 'bout taking the opportunity to suggest another dog that might be more fitting. Again, it wasn't that Waffle wasn't a fit, but the way in which our interest in him was handled. I have read all the 1 Star reviews for this rescue and found we are just one of many potential adopters who were on the receiving end of an unwarranted, rude and insulting response. According to some, they didn't even get that. Others, had so many validations and reference requests made of them, that the dog they were interested in went to someone else.... In my opinion, this rescue, and the volunteer we dealt with, seems to think they are without reproach, merely because they are a volunteer. They actually seemed to want kudos because they were juggling their families, a job, their own dogs AND volunteering. While admirable, its nothing the rest of us haven't juggled at some point in our lives, been there, done that! To my knowledge, having a full life with responsibilities has never been an excuse for bad behavior and last I checked, volunteering is a choice. There were a thousand different ways our inquiry could have been handled or communicated, but they chose to go straight for the jugular, without any consideration to how their response would be taken, or maybe they did and just didn't care. We are more than happy to walk away from this rescue and suggest you do the same. I will not look back once I hit the send button on this email. From our experience and from reading the many 1 star reviews, it seems this rescue is playing God with these dogs lives. While they should no doubt have these dogs best interest at heart, and have put themselves in the tough position of being judge and juror, it begs to be asked how many good and loving homes have been immediately ruled out due to their Holier than Thou and complete sanctimonious attitude and behavior?
