Maltese Rescue California - Escondido Pet Shelter

Maltese Rescue California

Maltese Rescue California is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers. The dedicated rescue volunteers work tirelessly to ensure unwanted, homeless Maltese and other small breed dogs are placed in permanent loving homes. Maltese come to our rescue from many sources; animal shelters, animal control agencies, owner surrenders, other rescue groups, veterinarians, death of the primary caretaker, people whose health has changed, and those facing loss of home. Our rescue volunteers provide adoption services for Maltese and other small breed dogs acquired from shelters or surrendered by their owners. Approved foster homes are utilized to care for abused, sickly, and homeless dogs until such time as an adoptive family is approved for the dogs forever home. A vital component of Maltese Rescue California is the education of the public regarding breed characteristics, responsible dog ownership, training and humane care of a Maltese.

Adoption Process

The first step is to fill out an online adoption application. All adoption applications are forwarded to our Adoption Coordinators for review. Based on the needs of our rescue dog and the descriptions in the adoption application, applicants are selected for a telephone interview. During the telephone call by our Adoption Coordinator, further information on the dog is presented and any areas of concern are discussed. An applicant’s questions are also answered during this call. Due to our limited staff, telephone contact is limited to an applicant who can provide the best care for our dog. After the telephone interview, our Adoption Coordinators confer on the applicant information and the suitability of the family for our rescue dog. If all parties feel the applicant and dog would be a good match, an appointment is scheduled for the applicant to meet the dog. A home visit may be scheduled by one of our representatives to determine if the home and yard provide a “safe” environment for our rescue dog. When the above steps are completed and the adoption donation/fee is paid, the dog joins the new family. When several applicants desire to adopt the same dog, the Adoption Selection Committee selects the adoptive applicant who can best meet the dog’s needs.
