Lynchburg Humane Society - Lynchburg Pet Shelter

For over seventy years, the Lynchburg Humane Society has operated as a private, non-profit organization, caring for lost and homeless pets. Last year, our Lynchburg Center for Pets cared for 3,811 pets and 93% of the pets went to new or existing homes. We are a 501c3, as well as a No Kill Humane Society, where we firmly believe that no healthy or treatable pet should be euthanized. By operating the public shelter for the City of Lynchburg, we accept the lost or unwanted pets surrendered to us from those communities. We help pets at risk for euthanasia at other shelters by transferring them into our care. Last year, 885 pets were brought to safety at LHS from other shelters. We accept those that are easily adoptable as pets, as well as those that need special nurturing from abusive or neglectful experiences. Along with our Center for Pets, we also have a regional spay/neuter clinic which performs over 6,000 spay/neuter surgeries annually It is the help of the community that makes our life-saving programs possible. Mission: Help pets in need through sheltering, adoption, education, spay/neuter, and community outreach. Vision: A community free of homeless and neglected pets

Adoption Process

The Center for Pets is ready to assist you in finding the best match with one of our adoptable pets! We welcome you to stop by anytime to visit and see the pets. Speak with an adoption counselor to learn more information on any of our pets, and spend time one on one with our pets to get to know them better. If you make the decision to adopt, we will guide you through the process that should only take about 20-25 minutes. Please make sure to bring a photo ID in order to complete the adoption process. Placing a pet on ‘hold’: We want your adoption experience to be as pleasant and stress-free as possible. We allow potential adopters to place adoption holds on pets in order for them to make arrangements to get to LHS, prepare their home for the new pet’s arrival, take their time making adoption decisions, and to introduce family members and other pets. Holds may be placed over the phone, via email or in person, and in the case of a “tie”, the individual physically visiting the shelter and the pet will be granted the first hold. 1st hold: $40 per 24 hours, 2nd hold and beyond: $25. Hold fees are non-refundable and are not applied towards the adoption fee.
