Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter nestled on six wooded acres in Huntington, Long Island. We have been dedicated to saving abandoned dogs and cats and placing them into loving forever homes since 1927. Age, physical condition, and socialization issues are never criteria for rescuing a dog or cat whose life is in jeopardy. Through rescue from kill facilities, rehabilitation of sick and unsocialized pets, and a 100% spay/neuter program, We hope to end pet overpopulation and place all dogs and cats into loving forever homes.
Upon arriving at Little Shelter you will be given short pre-interview form to fill out. You will then be guided through the shelter with an adoption counselor who will show you all the pets you are interested in, as well as pets that fit your household and lifestyle. We encourage scheduling an appointment for those who are interested in seeing the cats. To ensure everyone's safety, tours for the cattery are limited to 1 family at a time due to the limited space indoors. Others will be asked to wait outside until their turn. All household members must come to Little Shelter to meet your new pet. Upon finding the ideal pet for you, you and the adoption counselor will place the animal on hold for 24 hours. Little Shelter does not do same day adoptions. During this time our adoption counselors will check two personal references for the adopters, as well as perform a veterinarian check. If you have a landlord, we will check your buildings policies on pet ownership. If you have a another pet an interaction is required. This is usually the last step in the adoption process. Upon completing this process, the adopters will come back the next day and take their newly adopted pet home, and will get to take a family photo with their pet. Congratulations!
