The Lenawee Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping animals and the people who love them. Founded in 1921, the Lenawee Humane Society receives absolutely no government support and relies solely on donations from supporters like you. With your help, we are able to give every animal in our care a second chance at the life they deserve. Our mission is to save the lives of animals while enriching the lives of humans. We envision a community informed about animal welfare and humane education; animals and families brought together based on the individual wants and needs of both; services available to provide low cost spay and neuter; resources to ensure animals can stay in their homes when times get tough; and support for families when unexpected events occur, ultimately preventing animal overpopulation, abandonment, abuse and homelessness.
1. Submit adoption application. Apply online or print and complete your application. Help us process your application more quickly by filling out all fields as completely and accurately as possible. For example, please include landlord’s phone number if you’re a renter or your parents’ phone number if you live with them. Trust us, they’re much happier with you and us if we keep them “in the know.” 2. Select the pet(s) you’re interested in adopting. Browse through available or upcoming pets. Check out current available dogs and cats or view current strays to see animals who could be available soon. Make sure to check each animal’s current stage when you click on their picture. 3. Wait to hear from us. Unless a special situation is happening (like a puppy mill bust or a puppy transport), you can expect to hear from us within two business days after submitting your application. Some applications can be approved within a few hours, others could take several weeks if we’re having difficulties contacting a landlord or veterinarian. 4. Schedule adoption interview. When we contact you to give you the good news that you’re officially an approved adopter, we’ll schedule an adoption interview so you can meet the pet(s) you’re interested in! Kind of like a first date, you’ll get to know each other to make sure you’re a good fit. If you have other pets or kids who should meet your potential new family member, plan to bring them along. Expect some kissing on the first date too. Most of our shelter pets aren’t shy. 5. Adopt your pet. When you find your perfect match, the next step is to make it official! If your new BFF is spayed/neutered and ready to go home, we may be able to complete your adoption immediately after your interview. If he or she is not yet ready to go, we’ll schedule an appointment to complete your adoption as soon as they’re ready! 6. Live happily ever after. Enjoy your new shelter pet and all the joy he or she will bring! Remember, we cannot guarantee their health or temperament, but we promise to disclose everything we DO know about them. We want your life together to be long and wonderful! Send us updates via Facebook or email. We live for your Happy Tails!
