Leia's Hope Canine Rescue - Decatur Pet Shelter

Leia's Hope Canine Rescue

Leia’s Hope was originally started not as a rescue, but as a voice to save a dog named Leia from being euthanized at a local animal control facility. We were successful in placing Leia in a great rescue that could take care of her needs. It wasn’t until months later that Leia’s Hope Canine Rescue was established in hopes of being that rescue for dogs like Leia at risk of euthanasia. We chose to focus on senior and special need dogs as they are often the first to be euthanized when space becomes an issue at animal control facilities. Senior dogs make some of the best pets! There is no greater love than that of a senior dog. Leia’s Hope is a volunteer-run rescue organization. All of our dogs are housed in foster homes where they receive all the love and medical care they need. We rescue dogs from animal control facilities, breeders retiring their parent dogs, and local owners who can no longer care for their dogs. All dogs are fully vetted receiving appropriate vaccines, spay/neuter, microchipped, heart worm and flea prevention and anything else deemed essential for good quality of life. We love our dogs like family and want the very best for them!

Adoption Process

Leia’s Hope is foster based, therefore all dogs live in a home. Meet and greets with available dogs are made ONLY AFTER the process is completed. Step 1: Submit an application for an available dog. Applications received for dogs not available or generic applications not specific to a dog are not reviewed. Step 2: A volunteer will process your application. This process can take 7-10 days depending on the quantity of applications we receive, the volunteers schedule (we all work full-time) and availability of your vet and references. Step 3: If you meet our vetting and personal reference standards and the home appears to be a good match, we will reach out to perform a homecheck. Step 4: After meeting the requirements in step 3, we will set up a time for you to meet the dog. All family members and pets living in the home must be present. Sometimes step 3 and 4 are done together. Step 5: If the meet goes well, and everyone is in agreement the dog can be adopted by your family. We offer a 14 day trial period. If within the 14 days, it is decided it is not a good fit, you may return the dog and receive a refund on your adoption.
