Orphan Dog Rescue - Lakeport Pet Shelter

Orphan Dog Rescue

Over 3,000. That’s the number of dogs that have been re-homed since the humble beginnings of Orphan Dog Rescue in 2004. Mike and Karen Schaver had a vision. Buy a ranch big enough to shelter as many orphan dogs as possible, administer badly needed medical care, including the spaying and neutering of unfixed dogs, provide daily doses of love, hugs and nurturing to scared, neglected and sometimes badly abused dogs, and ultimately, find them new, permanent and loving homes. To make this vision a reality, both worked 2 to 3 jobs along with Karen’s job as a full time public school teacher. By 2004, they were able to save enough money to purchase the 80-acre Orphan Dog Ranch property living in a barn on the property for 2 years until the main house was built. It was during this time that Karen began establishing vital relationships with local animal agencies, vets and pet food stores. Orphan dog Ranch now homes over 250 dogs every year that are rescued from Northern California and high-kill shelters in Southern California and other overpopulated shelters. Karen and her devoted team of dedicated volunteers, drive 2 hours each way, every Saturday to set up adoption events in Petaluma, Novato and San Rafael as well as other Bay Area locations.

Adoption Process

You are ready to make it permanent by filling out the papers and going through the process. It is going to require that you answer some questions, let us know a little about your history with dogs, your family and whether or not THIS particular dog will fit into YOUR home. While we can't promise or say if this is the right dog for you, this process will help ensure that if you do become a forever home...it is really forever! By the time you've completed the process you'll have needed the following things, though not neccessarily in this order: Found a dog; Completed an application; Met the dog you'd like to adopt in person- at an event OR here in Lakeport; Had an interview with an LCAS Volunteer; Paid your adoption fees.
