Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue

Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue (KMAR) is a group of dedicated volunteers on a mission to improve and save the lives of animals in Kentucky. Our volunteer and foster families are spread out over a vast area of rural Kentucky encompassing more than thirty counties. We are unified by a common goal….every animal is deserving of a life full of love, security and care! The animals that come to KMAR do so in a myriad of ways. We work with rural shelters to pull dogs that were either owner surrendered or strays that were never claimed; we respond to calls regarding animals in distress or being neglected; we are contacted by people finding strays; and the list goes on. Regardless of how the animals found their way into our homes and into our hearts, we help them! We are very much so a “boots on the ground” organization, intervening on behalf of the animals. We take in many medicals, special needs dogs. We are a foster home based group that works with partner rescues in the Northern part of the U.S. to help insure that all of the animals we rescue get a chance to live the lives they deserve. We do limited adoptions and often encounter animals who are too sick to make the trip Northward, whether from years of neglect or chronic illnesses. These sweet souls become Hospice babies and live their remaining days with love and comfort in the arms of one of our Foster Families. KMAR receives no funds from any state or federal sources. We are a 501c3, tax-exempt all volunteer organization. All of the animals we house, feed, transport and provide vet care for are funded solely from donations! The volunteers at KMAR truly live by our motto every day….Live – Love – Rescue!

Adoption Process

Step 1 - Fill out an Adoption Application. Step 2 - Phone Interview. Step 3 - Meeting between Applicant & Available Dogs. Step 4 - Reference Checks. Step 5 - Home Visit. Step 6 - Adoption is Made Official. Adoption Trial Period/Foster to Adopt Program - The Adoption Trial period is for our harder to place dogs and cats, those with either behaviour issues or major medical problems (heartworm positive, impending surgery, etc.). Please discuss this option with our volunteers to see if this might work for you. At the start of the trial you are required to sign an adoption contract. If needed, our organization can provide a kennel/crate, food/water bowls, leash and collar for you to use during the trial period. We may also provide a small supply of dog food that will allow you to transition the dog’s diet to another food. If at any time during the trial period you are having issues with the dog, please contact us immediately. Post Adoption Follow-up Visit - Our adoption contract contains a clause that allows one of our volunteers or a representative the ability to perform a follow-up visit. We may require such a visit if we feel that the terms of the adoption contract are not being met. Kentucky Mutts Rescue is committed to the life, health and well-being of every dog we place for the remainder of that dog’s life. Should the adoption not work out or you need to re-home the dog, our contract requires that the dog be returned to the rescue.
