The Joplin Humane Society is dedicated to finding forever homes for the unwanted, abandoned, and neglected dogs in our care. Although their bodies may come in bruised and their ability to trust may be tested, they are not broken. The pets in our shelter come to us as stray or unwanted by their owners; some arrive as victims of cruelty and neglect. With kind and compassionate care by our staff and veterinarians, we prepare them for the transition for what will be the first day of the BEST of thier life... a new forever home and family.
We believe in an open, non-judgmental adoption process. We recognize that no one is perfect and try to match a person's pet expectations so fewer pets are returned. Under normal conditions the process is: Come in with your family and look around (fyi - no adoption will be started within 15 minutes of closing time). If you see a pet that you like, ask staff to meet the pet (if the pet is available to be taken out). Complete the adoption questionnaire. Complete all family/dog meets that are required. After the meeting, go over what information we have on file about the pet and his/her past experience. Finish the process by having a conversation with our adoption staff. Most of our pets can go home the same day.

It also plays an ever-evolving role as mediator on the changing relationship between people and animals. Since 1948, the Humane Society has reached out to those who enjoy and employ animals, as well as those people who love and share their lives with them.
