The Jackson County Animal Shelter is part of the Environmental Health Section of the Jackson County Department of Public Health. We are grateful for the many hands involved in the caretaking and protection of our pets. Our Shelter is maintained by: A team of Animal Control Officers dedicated to protecting the public health of our community; Shelter Attendants and Personnel that commit to the welfare of our animals; Rescue Partners that work to ensure our pets get a forever home; Volunteers who donate time and special skills (i.e. maintaining our Facebook page: Friends of the Jackson County Animal Shelter-NC)
The adoption fee is typically $70 for dogs and $55 for cats. The price includes spay or neuter, a Rabies vaccine, and other routine vaccines/tests. All pets must be spayed or neutered before they can be adopted. If an animal has arrived to us already spayed/neutered or has a current Rabies vaccination, the adoption fee will be reduced. To adopt an animal, you must be at least 18 years old, provide identification, and provide a current physical address. All dogs must leave the Shelter on a leash and collar. If you do not bring these items with you, the Shelter will have a limited supply available for purchase. All cats must leave the Shelter in a carrier. If you do not bring this item with you, the Shelter will have cardboard carriers available for purchase.

ARF serves the community in many ways. We rescue animals from the shelter and the community, assist other rescue groups without 501(c)3 status to pull animals and gain access to services, attend weekly adoption events, send unadopted animals to New England and New Jersey on our frequent transports, and run two low-cost or free spay/neuter trips to Asheville Humane Alliance every month.
