Humane Society Of Southern Illinois - Murphysboro Pet Shelter

Humane Society Of Southern Illinois

The Humane Society of Southern Illinois was founded in 1956. We are a very small 501c3, non-profit 0pen access facility that accepts any animal that is brought to us by the public as well as functioning as the holding facility for all of Jackson County Animal Controls. Our facility takes in approximately 3,000 animals yearly and we do the best we can to find homes for all of them. At our facility, we have a small Limited Access or No-Kill adoption program for cats, dogs, and small mammals. In December 2005, the Humane Society of Southern Illinois began working with an independent rescue coordinator to place adoptable animals in high-quality Limited Access programs in the northern part of the state that would otherwise be euthanized due to space. In January 2018, the shelter expanded our rescue network to other licensed 501c3 Limited Access shelters across the United States to continue reducing our overall euthanasia rate and saving lives. We currently have approximately 125 active Rescue Partners to date. To help reduce our communities pet overpopulation, the Humane Society of Southern Illinois provides vouchers for low-cost spay and neuter once a month through our Pennies for Pets program. This program is strictly donation-based and has helped provide low-cost alterations for over 8,000 animals since its start in 1997.
