Adoption Process

Adoption applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please understand that our goal at the Humane Society is to ensure that all of our shelter animals are matched with their ideal human companion and are placed in a home where they will be happy and thrive. The safety and health of our shelter pets always comes first. We will always make the decision that is in the best interest of the shelter animal. Please note: Sometimes, we receive many applications for a single cat or dog. Only one of those people can take that pet home and we do not have the ability or resources to inform all of the other applicants. We update our website and Facebook page so you can see which pets have already been adopted. So what is our office specifically looking for on your adoption application? If you and your family rent a home or apartment, our front office will contact your landlord to make sure you are allowed to have pets. Please be sure to include your landlord or housing complex’s phone number on your application so that we can contact them. If you have a “pet agreement” or lease you may bring the documentation in to save time. Applications will not be approved until we are able to get in contact with your landlord. If you have other cats or dogs living in your home, you will be required to show proof that they are up to date on vaccines and spayed or neutered. You can bring vet records with you to the shelter, or have your veterinarian email them to us at info@lebanonhumane.org or FAX to 717-866-2782. Humane Society of Lebanon County staff will no longer call your veterinarian for vaccine records, as many veterinary hospitals and clinics in the area will not release medical records to a third party. If you are interested in adopting a dog from the shelter and have another dog at home (or multiple dogs), we require that you bring your current dogs in for a meet and greet to make sure that they all get along. Meet and greets will be performed with a member of the Humane Society’s staff. All persons (adult & children) residing in the household must come to the Humane Society to meet with the shelter animal, to ensure that the animal will be well-placed in the home. If everything goes well at the meet and greet, you may put a 24 hour hold on an animal, or opt to take the shelter animal home with you that day. Please note that we can only hold an animal for 24 hours, and no longer. If the shelter animal is not picked up within the 24 hour hold period, the animal will be placed up for adoption once again. Cat and dog adoption packages include the following: spay/neuter, first vaccinations, de-worming, flea treatment, HomeAgain microchip and starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet food. Cat adoption also includes a FeLV/FIV test. Any adopter who does not bring their own cat carrier must purchase a cardboard caddie from our shelter for a fee of $5 per caddie. This fee covers our cost of the caddies. Dog adoption includes collar and leash.
