Humane Animal Treatment Society - Mount Pleasant Pet Shelter

Humane Animal Treatment Society

For over 20 years, the Humane Animal Treatment Society has been making Mid-Michigan a safer place for companion animals through lifesaving programs and community education. The Humane Animal Treatment Society (HATS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization that is independently operated, serving the Mid-Michigan area. HATS is contracted to be the sole provider of all animal care and adoption services at the Isabella County Animal Control facility. Each year we help nearly 1,000 homeless or lost pets; providing food, vaccinations, veterinary care, and a clean, safe environment while they await placement in their forever homes or a safe return to their owner. We also operate the HATS Health Clinic which provides low-cost spay and neuter services to help reduce animal overpopulation in our community. Our organization relies on donations, local community support, and grant funds to allow us to continue our lifesaving services. Each day we make our community a better place for homeless animals by giving them a second chance at life with the opportunity to receive the medical care and behavioral support they need to make their way into a loving forever home. We continuously strive to educate our community on responsible pet ownership, provide support for pet owners in times of need, and as always, promote the humane treatment of all animals.

Adoption Process

1. View Animals & Submit an Application. The first step in the adoption process is viewing our adoptable animals by clicking the links above. All available animals will have pictures posted. If you don't see a good match at this time, please continue to check the website regularly or visit www.petfinder.com to broaden your search to other shelters and rescues. If you find an animal, or several, that you would like to meet, please submit an adoption application by clicking the button above. After submission an adoption counselor will contact you within 2-4 business days to review your application and answer any questions you may have. We appreciate your patience during this process and kindly request that you do not call until we reach out. 2. Meet & Make Preparations. An adoption counselor will schedule a time for you to visit our facility to meet potential pets and get to know their personalities and activity levels. After finding your perfect match, we will make arrangements for adoption and inform you of any supplies you will want to gather. Don't forget to discuss your plans to adopt with any family members, roommates, or landlords. Adopting a pet is a big commitment and everyone in your household should be on board for the journey. 3. Finalize the Adoption. Once you've found your perfect pet we will arrange a date and time for pick-up, payment will be completed, and contracts will be signed. You will receive an adoption bag containing your pet's medical records and a sample bag of food to help with the transition. Many adoptions can be completed on the day of your first visit if all preparations have been taken care of and the animal is medically ready. In some circumstances an animal may need more medical care before going home, or the potential adopter may choose to schedule a second visit to ensure the pet is a good match. 4. Welcome Home. Transitioning from a shelter environment to a home setting is a major lifestyle change and it is very common for animals to behave out of character at first. Keep in mind that your household will want to exercise patience and understanding during this period. Please talk to our experienced staff or visit our behavior resource page if you have any questions about introducing a new animal into your home.
