Adoption Process

Choosing Your Companion - The decision is made! You want a pet and have a good idea of the type that would best suit your lifestyle. You reviewed our adoptable pets on-line and found one you might want to adopt. The next step is to fill out and submit an online adoption application. You will be contacted within 24-48 hours by our adoption coordinator to discuss your choices and answer any questions you might have. You will then set an appointment to come meet that "dog of your dreams." NOTE: Shelter visits are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Any person who comes to the shelter without an appointment will be asked to visit our web site and fill out an adoption application. HBPR does not provide tours of the facility. This is for the protection of the animals we serve. Getting To Know You - HBPR requires all members of the household meet the animal before the adoption will be approved and finalized. It is important to assess the dynamic between the dog and all members of the household, not just a single family member. If you are applying to adopt a dog and you already have a dog living at home, you will be asked to bring your existing dog(s) to HBPR for an introduction to the dog you seek to adopt. This is a very important step in making sure that your new dog will fit into your home and be accepted by your existing canine family members. It's lot like marriage. You want your marriage to last. The same holds true for the relationship with the rescue you're planning to adopt. It's also a forever commitment -- until death do you part. The adoption counselor will talk with you about the care your new pet will need. The counselor may ask you additional questions about your home and lifestyle in order to help determine whether or not it's a good match for both dog and new owner. Once the counselor has discussed the application with you, the adoption will be either refused or tentatively approved. Final approval will be determined once all references have been checked and the home visit completed. Thinking it over - If your application is tentatively approved, you will be given some important written material to review and instructed to call the shelter the next day to check the status of your application. The written information is designed to help you think through the responsibilities that come with a new pet and avoid some common pitfalls. If your adoption is approved, a "GOING HOME" appointment will be set. During the time between approval and bringing your new family member home, we suggest that you make any necessary preparations at home and purchase any necessary supplies. In adopting a pet you are making a 10-to-20 year commitment. This should never be an impulsive decision! Take your time throughout the adoption process and stay open to the advice and experience that our adoptions staff and volunteers have to offer. Our goal is to place our animals in a permanent loving home so that they never again have to suffer the trauma of separation from their families. But we also want to assure that those willing to open their hearts and homes to one of our rescued kids is spared that same trauma. Sometimes, the dog you want isn't the best match for you and your family. But that "best match' is out there and we will do all that we possibly can to help you find it. Homeward Bound - When you arrive at the shelter to pick up your new pet, you will be given an adoption contract to sign. At this time, the adoption fee will be collected. HBPR accepts Master Card and Visa as well as cash or checks. If you are adopting a cat, you should bring a carrier or other container in which to safely transport the animal home. All dogs must leave on a leash and cats must be in a carrier. Adoption Fees - Adoption fees for dogs range from $180-225, Cats prices vary. For additional information or questions, feel free to contact us. An Important Note - You are free to withdraw your adoption application at any time during the adoption process. While we want to find homes for the animals, we do not want you to feel any pressure to adopt. If you decide that you are not prepared to meet the needs of the animal you intended to adopt, you are doing the best thing you can do by canceling the adoption before you take the animal home. Homeward Bound Pet Rescue thanks you for considering adopting a shelter pet. We receive wonderful animals every day! If the right match is not here for you on your first visit, come again. You will be surprised at the diversity of animals we receive. Our goal is the right match for both owner and companion animal so you can enjoy each other's company for many wonderful years to come.
