Adoption Process

It all starts with the application to adopt: When filling out the application form, be sure to have the person you used as a personal reference call the rescue on your behalf at 315-446-5970 Ext 1. If you have a veterinarian, be sure to let your veterinarian know that HHDR will be calling. You must give permission to your veterinarian to speak with HHDR. Once your application is fully processed you are welcome to come in and meet our dogs during our business hours (Tues-Fri 12-6, or Sat 12-6 (appointment recommended), Sun 12-4 (appointment recommended), closed Monday). You cannot adopt, hold a dog, or visit them until your application has been fully processed. Please watch your email and junk folder, we communicate primarily through email throughout the process. You can find the dates of upcoming transports here. Wednesday prior to the arrival date, the new dogs will be posted on our Facebook page and will be listed on our website. If there is a particular dog that you are interested in, you can call the Rescue to speak with a staff member to determine if the dog would be a good fit for your environment based on the personality profile provided by the foster home (the full profile is NOT available on our website). If the dog seems like it may be a match, you can reserve the dog to allow you the first opportunity to meet them. It does not obligate you to adopt. Your application is good for six months, but if you have not found your dog within that period of time, you can request that your application be updated and kept active. After one year, you will need to submit a new application. If you are planning on bringing in your dog for a meet-and-greet, please leave your dog in the car and come in the rescue and meet the dog first. Please do not bring your dog with you until your application has been completed. We will not introduce dogs until the completion of the application process.
