Adoption Process

Every animal that comes into our rescue has a story. Along with that story comes time needed to heal, both mentally and physically, as well as expenses for basic care and sometimes much more. It is best to complete our Adoption Application and obtain adoption approval prior to setting an appointment to meet one of the animals you are interested in. We also need fosters! If you have space for a foster animal and want the complete satisfaction of rehabilitating and re-homing animal in need, please let us know! You can also complete our Foster Application and get a head start! Prior to adoption or foster approval, we require an onsite visit to verify shelter, appropriate fencing, water availability as well as contact with one of the veterinarians you have used for the other animals that you have.

  • My family's experience with Hay Dude started well, but quickly deteriorated when we went to pick up our new Labrador puppy from the transport location in Pittsburgh. We were bouncing with excitement, leash and collar and toys in hand, ready to bring our good boy to his forever home... ...and were instead presented with a two-year-old terrier. The foster had sent us the wrong dog. Apparently, she'd been caring for two dogs with the same name, had somehow gotten them confused, and had taken our puppy to an event where he was adopted out from under us. The people who adopted him understandably didn't want to give him back, and so, while we were heartbroken to lose the little guy we'd been so excited to meet, we agreed to adopt a different puppy instead. We chose Remi, a German Shepherd mix, and I spoke for at least an hour on the phone with his foster, Paula. It was a good, very thorough conversation, and by the end of it, it was agreed that Remi would be ours. Paula called me again a couple of hours later to say that she'd changed her mind, because we have young cats, and the more she thought about it, the more she worried that Remi would instinctively view the cats as prey, and we would end up shutting him away to protect them. I explained to her that I'd had Shepherd dogs with cats before with absolutely no trouble, and that one of the reasons we were getting a puppy specifically was because dogs and cats raised together will bond with one another before they ever view each other with any sort of antagonism. But no, she remained convinced that we would, and I quote, "break Remi's spirit." Break his spirit. We would break a puppy's spirit. It was a bizarre, ignorant, unfounded and unnecessarily cruel accusation, and frankly a cruel reversal of her endorsement, as she was well aware of what had happened with our first attempted adoption; and while Jessica, Hay Dude's coordinator, wasn't herself convinced by Paula's reasoning, she informed us that she had to respect her opinion. She had to respect the possibility that we would break a puppy's spirit...by raising it with cats. I asked for a refund. We'd rather adopt from a rescue with kinder, more trustworthy fosters, who don't approve our application and then feel it's appropriate to presume future neglect on our part, right on the heels of their neglecting to send us the puppy we'd been contractually promised in the first place.
