Havanese Angel League Organization - Livonia Pet Shelter

Havanese Angel League Organization

HALO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the survival and care of Havanese dogs. Our goal is to save one Havanese at a time. Since we were formed in 2002, we have rescued 1400 Havanese. Most of our rescues are from puppy mills with a small number coming from animal shelters or owner surrenders. Many of the mill dogs we rescue are about to be euthanized because they are no longer considered "profitable" by the puppy mill - a 7-month old puppy is too old to sell at a pet store; a 9-year old female is no longer producing large enough litters; or there are health issues that would cost money to treat. As long as there is a foster home available, we rescue every single Havanese we can. We ensure they receive any medical treatment necessary and we carefully choose adopters based on the best fit for each individual Havanese. Until they are adopted, no matter how long that takes, our fosters help them adjust to a new life of freedom. We are determined that the life they lead after rescue will be a safe, healthy and happy one. The resilience of this breed and their ability, no matter their age, to move beyond the horrors of life in a mill to become loving, happy family pets is truly amazing. Our work will continue until laws are changed to ban puppy mills throughout the country.

Adoption Process

1. You must be 21 years or older to adopt. Also, we do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6. 2. Please complete the Preliminary Adoption Application so that we can learn more about you and your family. 3. When your application is received, we will contact you to schedule a telephone interview. This normally takes around 30 to 45 minutes. If we believe you are potentially a good fit for one of our dogs, we will then contact your references and your veterinarian. 4. The last step before we can approve your application is a home visit. We will arrange to have this at a time convenient for you. We ask that if possible, all family members be present. 5. If you are approved to adopt, and there is a particular dog you are interested in, we will explore with you whether that dog is a good fit for you. If another dog is a better fit, we will let you know. We’ll give you an explanation as to the temperament of the dog and why we feel he/she is the right one for you. We will then arrange for you to contact the foster family. If you want to meet the dog before the adoption, that can be arranged at that time too. We do not allow applicants to meet our rescues until AFTER they are approved. 6. The actual adoption takes place at the foster home. You will sign a contract of adoption and pay the adoption fee, which can generally be found in each dog’s Petfinder.com listing. This only partly offsets the costs for the vet care received by each dog - dental exam and cleaning, spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing and medication, fecal test, general vet exam and anything else required by each individual dog.

Once upon a time there lived a group of loyal, sincere, and trustworthy women. Their collective spirits sought to come to the aid of abandoned, unwanted, abused, and lost felines. They wanted to give these beautiful, if sometimes scruffy, creatures a new beginning.
