H.A.P.P.E. Parrots Rescue was formed by Kathryn & Ed Forst in May 2007. It is their firm belief that parrot ownership is not for every individual. Parrots have always been high maintenance pets, that require special people to attend to their special needs. Education, on the part of the owner, is essential for the well being of the bird. The Forsts have had parrots since 1978 when their first bird, Willy, a peach face lovebird, flew into Kathryn's place of business. For the next 15 years, Willy was part of the Forst family, until Willy's death in 1993. In 1994, Kathryn purchased a normal male cockatiel from a pet shop. They are happy to report, Merlin is still alive and doing well. Two years after their cockatiel arrived at the Forst home, the Forst family were given a pacific parrotlet, named Perry Ellis. Perry was the smallest parrot in the world measuring a mere 4 inches. It wasn't until the death of Kathryn's mother in 2000, that the Forsts were given their first large parrot, an amazon named Pepper. Pepper is truly an amazing parrot. At 12 years old already, Pepper had her likes and dislikes. Pepper loves everyone, especially women. She sticks her foot out to be picked up if a woman enters the room. In summer of 2000, the Forsts started helping at a local rescue to learn more about the proper care of parrots. Seven years later, and more knowledgeable, the Forsts have 11 birds and started their own rescue, H.A.P.P.E. Parrots. Through extensive research of medical journals, Internet, avian veterinarians, and though association and interaction with well known behaviorists, Kathryn has accumulated an extensive background in understanding parrots, and her expertise in these areas has landed her a steady flow of clients. H.A.P.P.E. Parrots is a licensed parrot rescue in the State of Illinois and has received their 501C3 charity status from the IRS. Every donation sent to us will be used for veterinary expenses or for the everyday bird expense we encounter. You will receive a tax deductible receipt with each donation! H.A.P.P.E. Parrots has had the opportunity to transport parrots to & from other rescues. Kathryn is fortunate to have a husband who is a corporate pilot and a son who is an airline pilot. Between these two individuals, H.A.P.P.E. Parrots can achieve permanent placement for parrots throughout the USA.
