Guilford County Animal Shelter - Greensboro Pet Shelter

The Guilford County Animal Shelter is the only public shelter in Guilford County. We are a professional, caring organization devoted to saving the lives of lost, abandoned and surrendered animals of Guilford County, N.C. We strive to humanely care for all the animals and work diligently to return lost animals to their owners. We are committed to making every adoption a positive, permanent experience for both the animals and the pet owner. We also conduct community awareness programs such as education on pet care and responsibility, as well as community outreach programs. The Guilford County Animal Shelter is committed to placing every adoptable animal into a new home. When we have an animal that cannot be placed by our organization, we work collaboratively with other rescue organizations to help place specific dogs, cats, livestock, exotic and wildlife. We will contact rescues that we have visited, or have received their license and other information to satisfy their good standing, and work with them for placement. The Guilford County Animal Shelter is committed to every animal that arrives at our facility. Our staff is devoted to treating every animal with a curable illness in order to help it get adopted. We are proud to have a 97% success rate with dogs and a 78% success rate with cats.

Adoption Process

1. Schedule an In Shelter Appointment online. 2. Arrive at the shelter at your scheduled time and check in with our Front Gate Staff. 3. Park in the designated area the front gate staffs directs you to and remain in your vehicle. 4. Shelter staff will direct come to your vehicle and discuss what pets are available and who you are interested in. 5. If you are interested in a cat, you will be escorted to our cat adoption area. If you are interested in a dog shelter staff will escort you to one of our dog meet and greet areas and bring out the dog you are interested in. 6. Once you have spent time with the pet, asking any questions you may have, and you've decided to adopt your new pet our staff will escort you back to your vehicle and give you an adoption application to fill out. 7. If the pet you are interested in has not yet been spayed or neutered, front desk staff will arrange a time for you to return to the shelter after surgery to finish the adoption process and pick up your pet. If the pet is already spayed/neutered the process can be finished at your appointment. 8. A staff member will then come out to collect your application, ID and payment and bring you back the final paperwork to sign. 9. Shelter staff will then go over your adoption packet curbside with you at your vehicle and assist in loading your new pet into your vehicle. 10. Congratulations! You are then ready to bring your new pet home! Remember that there is an adjustment period as your new pets decompresses from the shelter and begins to get used to living with you. While every pet is different the general guideline is the Rule of 3. It normally takes a pet 3 days to decompress from shelter life, 3 weeks to begin to understand they are living with you and start a routine and 3 months to truly become a part of the household routines.
