Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue’s mission is to save the lives of homeless domestic and non-releasable pigeons and doves in the Great Lakes region, who otherwise would face euthanasia or a slow death from lack of care, by providing foster homes, adoption services, medical treatment, and compassionate education about the need for pigeon and dove rescue. Even though people care about pigeons, rescued pigeons don’t have the options that other rescued animals have. Traditional pet shelters and city animal control facilities often consider pigeons to be wildlife, while state-funded wildlife rescue facilities can’t accept pigeons because they’re not native to the Great Lakes region. Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue (formerly Chicago Pigeon Pets Rescue) has evolved from a group of pigeon-enthusiast bird rescue volunteers to a multi-state rescue and foster network, caring for as many as 160 birds at any given time. From owner surrenders to complex medical rescue cases, we’ve had many pigeons and doves come through our rescue and adoption programs – and more all the time! We respond to hundreds of messages every week from pigeon-people all over the world, advising on rescue, care, basic first aid, behavior, and even DIY pigeon prosthetics and rehabilitation equipment.
