Friends of Rabbits (FoR) was founded in 1997 and is a rabbit rescue organization dedicated to finding loving, indoor homes for rabbits in need. We are a nonprofit 501c3 organization based in the Washington DC / Baltimore greater metropolitan area. Friends of Rabbits rescues, rehabilitates and adopts out more than 200 rabbits each year, and over 80% of all donations go directly to purchasing supplies and veterinary care for our rabbits. When you adopt from us you truly save a life, enabling our volunteers to pull another rabbit in need from local animal control facilities. Our rabbits frequently come from the top of the euthanasia list, often within hours of being put to sleep for lack of space, temperament, and physical imperfections. FoR also works with area shelters to provide rabbit care education and to take in rabbits when the shelters are overloaded.
If you’re ready adopt, please submit an application form. A trusted FoR volunteer will contact you to discuss any questions you may have and to schedule a brief home visit to check out your future pet’s environment. The adoption fee is $90 for a single rabbit and $150 for a bonded pair, which helps to offset the cost of a spay or neuter. As of January 1, 2022, there is also a mandatory $50 RHD vaccine fee per rabbit. Please note that we do not adopt out rabbits to be class pets or for breeding. Rabbits are very social creatures and are happiest when they have another furry friend to snuggle up to. Particularly if your rabbit will be alone for much of the day, we recommend that you adopt a second rabbit as a companion. However, the bonding process can be quite involved, so Friends of Rabbits assists with bonding at no additional charge.
